Salmon have one wildly important goal: reach spawning grounds. Everything else—feeding, predator evasion, energy conservation—is subordinated or abandoned entirely. They stop eating, exhaust fat reserves, even allow body deterioration in service of this singular objective. A WIG isn't the most urgent task—it's the task that renders other failures irrelevant and other successes insufficient. Biology tolerates spectacular local failures when the WIG succeeds.
