Synaptic pruning, hippocampal neurogenesis, and sleep-mediated downscaling are active forgetting mechanisms that prevent neural networks from overfitting to past experience. The fruit fly uses dopamine-mediated forgetting pathways; the hydra replaces its entire neural net every twenty days. Forgetting is not decay — it is maintenance.
