Traction Channels
Origin: Gabriel Weinberg & Justin Mares (2014)
Biological Parallel
Plants acquire resources through multiple traction channels: roots absorb water and minerals from soil, leaves capture sunlight via photosynthesis, some species form mycorrhizal partnerships for phosphorus, and carnivorous plants extract nitrogen from insects. Most plants rely heavily on 1-2 primary channels (roots and leaves), with others providing supplementary traction. Testing which channels work in your environment is essential—a rainforest plant dependent on mycorrhizae dies in sterile greenhouse soil, just as a startup dependent on paid ads dies when CAC exceeds LTV.
