Feature Flags

Biological Parallel

Conditional gene expression is biology's feature flag system. E. coli's lac operon requires dual conditions (lactose present, glucose absent) to activate. Desert locusts toggle between solitary and gregarious phenotypes based on population density signals. Daphnia grow defensive helmets only when predator chemical cues are present. Aphids switch between winged and wingless forms based on environmental conditions. Bacillus subtilis activates sporulation — an entirely different life strategy — under starvation. Each uses the same genome with different feature sets conditionally deployed.
