Affirming a disjunct

Origin: Traditional logic

Biological Parallel

'Survive winter by migrating OR hibernating. Monarchs migrate. Therefore, they don't hibernate.' But some populations do both—partial migration with local dormancy. Affirming a disjunct assumes mutual exclusivity where none exists. Biological strategies often combine: birds that are territorial OR social can exhibit both (context-dependent territoriality). Evolution doesn't respect 'or'—it explores hybrid strategies whenever payoffs overlap. Exclusive categorization misses the combinatorial innovation.
