Ultimate Electronics' 2011 liquidation closed a chain of 46 electronics stores after years of decline. The company competed against Best Buy without the scale for purchasing power and against online without the convenience. Ultimate Electronics occupied the worst possible competitive position: higher prices than Amazon, less selection than Best Buy, and no differentiation. The liquidation was inevitable once management exhausted restructuring options.
