Tower Records

Retail · Founded 1960

Tower Records' 2006 liquidation closed 89 stores after digital downloads destroyed the music retail business. The company that once defined record store culture couldn't survive when customers could buy individual songs online. Tower's superstores offered selection that mattered less when everything was available digitally. Liquidation closed all stores; the brand survives only in Japan where physical media culture persists. Tower Records was among the first casualties of digital music disruption.
