Toshiba's 2015 exit from smartphones followed years of declining market share and losses. The company that pioneered many laptop technologies couldn't translate that expertise to smartphones. Toshiba sold its mobile operations to Fujitsu. The exit joined Sony, Sharp, and other Japanese manufacturers retreating from global smartphone competition.
