The Sports Authority's 2016 liquidation closed 450 stores after competition from Dick's Sporting Goods, Amazon, and specialty retailers proved insurmountable. The company had been through multiple owners (Kmart, then private equity) that loaded debt without improving operations. When the sporting goods category consolidated around Dick's and online, Sports Authority had neither the scale for purchasing power nor the specialization for expertise. Complete liquidation followed.
