Silicon Graphics

Silicon Graphics' 2009 bankruptcy ended a pioneer in 3D graphics that had powered Hollywood visual effects. SGI workstations created Jurassic Park's dinosaurs and Toy Story's animation. But NVIDIA's GPUs on PCs achieved comparable performance at fraction of the cost. SGI's attempt to pivot to servers faced the same Linux/Intel commoditization that killed Sun. Hollywood moved to commodity hardware; SGI's premium market disappeared.
