Saab Automobile

Automotive · Founded 1945

Saab Automobile's 2011 bankruptcy ended 64 years of Swedish automotive engineering after GM's divestiture left the company without resources. GM had acquired Saab in 2000 but never gave it platforms or investment to compete. When GM's 2009 bankruptcy required divestiture, Saab had no viable owner. Spyker's acquisition couldn't save Saab; bankruptcy followed in 2011. The brand that pioneered turbocharging and automotive safety innovations died because its parent company used it to extract value rather than invest in it.
