Rheingold's 1976 closure ended New York City's last major brewery after the 'Miss Rheingold' beauty contest lost cultural relevance and national competitors captured the market. The company that sponsored the Mets and Knicks couldn't compete against Budweiser and Miller's national campaigns. Rheingold demonstrated that regional identity couldn't create defensible positioning against national brands.
