One Kings Lane's 2016 sale to Bed Bath & Beyond for under $30 million collapsed a home goods flash sale site once valued at $900 million. The company pioneered designer home goods at flash sale prices, growing to $300 million in revenue. But competition, customer acquisition costs, and operational complexity destroyed margins. The sale to Bed Bath & Beyond (itself later bankrupt) represented a 97% value destruction. One Kings Lane demonstrated that high-touch home goods e-commerce requires either scale or margins - not neither.
