Northwest Airlines

Aviation · Founded 1926 · Defunct 2008

By Alex Denne

Northwest Airlines' 2005 bankruptcy and 2008 merger with Delta ended a carrier with 82 years of history. The airline had been leveraged-buyout target, labor battleground, and cost-structure problem throughout the 2000s. Bankruptcy restructured debt; the Delta merger eliminated the brand. Northwest demonstrated that legacy carriers faced existential choice: merge or die.
