Nokia's mobile phone division sale to Microsoft in 2013 for $7.2 billion ended the world's largest phone manufacturer. Nokia had 40% global market share in 2008; by 2013, it was fighting for survival. The Symbian operating system couldn't compete with iOS and Android. Nokia's 2011 pivot to Windows Phone came too late. Microsoft wrote off the acquisition within two years. Nokia demonstrated that market leadership provides no protection against platform shifts.
