Nokia-Siemens Networks
Nokia Siemens Networks' struggles demonstrate how telecom equipment faces brutal consolidation. The joint venture merged two struggling businesses but couldn't achieve the scale needed to compete with Huawei and Ericsson. Like combining two wounded animals hoping for one healthy one, the merger created an entity weaker than the sum of its parts. Nokia eventually bought out Siemens and later acquired Alcatel-Lucent.
