Montgomery Ward
Montgomery Ward's 2001 liquidation ended a 128-year retail history. The company that pioneered mail-order catalogs and helped settle the American West couldn't adapt to modern retail competition. After bankruptcy in 1997, the company attempted a comeback that failed. Complete liquidation closed 250 stores and eliminated 37,000 jobs. Montgomery Ward demonstrated that retail heritage provides no protection against changing consumer behavior.
