Independence Air

Independence Air's 2006 closure ended a low-cost carrier launched by Atlantic Coast Airlines after it terminated its United Express contract. The airline competed from Washington Dulles against United's hub. The strategy required more capital than investors provided. When venture funding dried up, Independence Air couldn't continue. The company demonstrated that launching airlines requires capital commitments that venture investors rarely sustain through losses.
