HTC's decline from $33 billion peak to near-extinction demonstrated how quickly smartphone advantages evaporate. The company made the first Android phone and the first Windows Phone but couldn't build brand loyalty or ecosystem lock-in. Samsung captured the Android premium market; Chinese manufacturers captured the budget market. HTC sold its Pixel phone division to Google in 2017.
