Global Crossing's 2002 bankruptcy was among the largest of the telecom bust, destroying $50 billion in market value. The company had built fiber optic networks connecting continents but faced accounting fraud allegations and overcapacity in the fiber market. The mechanism failure was infrastructure overbuild—the company and competitors laid far more fiber capacity than demand required.
