Gateway
Gateway's 2007 acquisition by Acer for $710 million ended the cow-spotted computer company. Gateway had pioneered direct PC sales alongside Dell but couldn't match Dell's execution or survive the industry margin collapse. The company's retail store experiment failed. Acer bought Gateway for brand and U.S. distribution, then largely abandoned the brand. Gateway demonstrated that 'me too' strategies fail when competitors execute better.
