Garden Fresh Restaurants' May 2020 bankruptcy permanently closed both Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes chains. The company operated 97 buffet locations across the country. When COVID made self-serve buffets impossible, management evaluated options and chose complete liquidation. No buyer wanted buffet restaurants that couldn't operate as buffets. Garden Fresh demonstrated that some business models face complete obsolescence rather than adaptation opportunities.
