Freshly, the prepared meal delivery service acquired by Nestle for $950M, was shut down in 2023 after Nestle concluded the unit economics couldn't work. The company demonstrated that even with Fortune 500 resources, some business models are fundamentally unviable. Meal delivery's perishable products, cold chain requirements, and customer acquisition costs created a trifecta of margin destruction.
