eMachines' 2004 acquisition by Gateway consolidated two struggling PC makers. eMachines had captured budget PC buyers through Walmart and Best Buy but couldn't achieve sustainable margins. The combined company was acquired by Acer in 2007. eMachines demonstrated that budget PC positioning creates volume but not viable economics.
