Data General's 1999 sale to EMC ended another minicomputer maker disrupted by PCs and servers. The company featured in Tracy Kidder's 'Soul of a New Machine' couldn't survive the industry transition. Data General pivoted to storage before EMC absorbed it. The company demonstrated that even technical excellence (documented in a Pulitzer-winning book) doesn't prevent extinction when platforms shift.
