Colonial BancGroup's 2009 FDIC seizure made it the sixth-largest bank failure in U.S. history at $25 billion in assets. The Alabama-based bank had expanded aggressively in Florida and other housing boom markets. When real estate collapsed, Colonial's construction and development loans defaulted at devastating rates.
