Alcatel-Lucent's 2016 absorption by Nokia demonstrates how telecom equipment mergers often destroy value. The Franco-American merger combined Bell Labs heritage with French engineering but couldn't integrate cultures or compete with Ericsson and Huawei. Like a species hybrid that inherits weaknesses from both parents, Alcatel-Lucent never achieved the synergies promised.
